Heart Failure Treatment

Your doctor will talk to you about heart failure and the different ways to manage your condition.

The cause of your heart failure will determine your treatment plan and it is likely to include

medications, diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes. Some patients may need surgery, visit

this section again as we will be adding information about surgical interventions.

Your doctor may start one medication at a time and then add others and increase the doses over

a period of time. The following medications are recommended for all patients with heart failure:

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACEI) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), beta-

blockers, and diuretics. Click the links to the left and learn about these medications.4

Surgical treatment benefit patients whose heart failure was caused by ischemic (such as a heart

attack) or valvular heart disease. The goals of heart surgery are to maintain or improve cardiac

function, decrease heart failure episodes, reduce hospital admissions, and improve functional

class.

Take an active role in your heart failure management ; you too can live with heart failure!
